I was not using Tailwind for Instagram until writing this post but I’ve been using it for my Pinterest accounts for a while. I recently got an e-mail from the Tailwind team that they’ve revamped Tailwind for Instagram.
Since it’s been so useful for me for Pinterest, I figured I might as well learn about the features and see if it would be worthwhile to implement it for my Instagram accounts as well.
I thought this would also be a great time to write up a review on it for you! Hope it’s helpful 🙂

Tailwind, Product Overview | What is Tailwind for Instagram?
Tailwind for Instagram is a social media scheduler. They first developed as a scheduler for Pinterest with the capability to publish the content to Facebook Pages and Twitter as well.
Tailwind was designed to help with social media branding, marketing, and growth by visually planning your schedule out. Furthermore, the app provides you with content planning and inspiration for your posts. It’s really meant for business accounts so make sure you convert your account to a business account before you try it so you can make the most use out of the analytics.
Each post can be optimized by posting at the times that your audience will be the most engaged and also with the highest yield hashtags for your niche. Bio links can be set to update based on content that you’re posting automatically so you don’t have to manually change anything. This allows you to drive more traffic through your Instagram page to whatever your call to action is at the time.
Lastly, Tailwind does have an App so you can do everything from your smartphone.
More recently, they expanded to Instagram. As they’ve become more established, they’ve decided to improve their Instagram platform by giving it a complete makeover:
The core features of Tailwind for Instagram:
- Auto-Publishing: auto publishes pre-scheduled posts
- SmartSchedule: tells you the best time slots for when to publish based on your audience engagement
- Hashtag Finder: recommended hashtags for you to help your audience find you
- Drag and drop calendar so you can preview your feed before you post in grid format and make sure everything looks good on Instagram and your content is staying consistent in terms of style and coloring
- Mad-lib style caption suggestions to keep your creativity flowing and also to save you time trying to brainstorm new caption ideas
- Content plans customized to your goals again to save you time and keep your content consistent
The whole idea behind Tailwind is to turn a manual scheduling system like this one:
Into an automated scheduling system like this one:
The Good, the Bad & the Ugly
While looking at the new changes and looking around the platform, this is what I found to be good and bad about Tailwind for Instagram. I’ve used other platforms, Instagram follower tracking systems, and much more intense and code-based social media planners so I’m comparing it to all the features that I know can be made available for Instagram.
Pro #1: Automatically publishing hashtags as the first comment so that they remain “hidden”
Pro #2: Auto-updating Instagram bio so that you can change your bio to match the content that you’re uploading. This is super useful because you don’t have to feel like you’re always using the same call to action over and over again. Plus it makes you seem more active on Instagram and makes your profile more dynamic.
Pro #3: Mobile App. Other services I’ve used don’t have this and it’s such a pain to not be able to make edits and scheduling changes from your phone. Especially if you’re doing this for your small business or blog – it’s so nice to be able to take photos of your daily business life and schedule it accordingly as you go
Pro #4: Regramming capabilities I really like because it gives you the option of having a TON more content without the pressure of always being the one to create it. Scheduling this in advance makes it SO much easier to always have good content posted on your profile.
Pro #5: Automatic content, caption style, and hashtag inspiration. Just makes the publishing process faster and more streamlined.
Con #1: Cannot automate your following and unfollowing or track who unfollowed you and your blocked users. Instagram doesn’t allow this type of behaviour, however, so you’re account runs the risk of getting banned if you use a service like this.
Con #2: A lot of features that can be a little bit overwhelming to get the hang of. I will say the training is excellent but sometimes it’s hard to know where to start. I would prefer it if they had a video series of like 10 videos that went through everything start to finish with each video like 10 minutes max. I don’t like spending a lot of time on training – I’d rather just start using the tool right away (patience is definitely not my strong suit haha).
Who is Tailwind for Instagram for?
From my experience, I think Tailwind is for 2 main people:
#1: Small business owners
This includes bloggers, online business owners, small brick and mortar business owners, Shopify owners, etc. This list basically comprises any small business where the owner wants to run their social media on their own and not have to outsource.
This is where I fit in! I own 3 online businesses so I use Tailwind in order to manage my social media for those on my own so I don’t have to hire anyone to do it for me.
#2: Social Media Managers
Tailwind is perfect for social media managers. It allows management of however many accounts you’d like all from one convenient location. It makes it literally easier than ever to manage other people’s social media. You can have your Pinterest accounts, your Instagram accounts and you can also link to Facebook and Twitter in order to share the pins that you create to those networks as well.
It’s pretty impossible for your competition who are doing things manually to replicate changing URLs in the Instagram bio with content, posting at optimal times for engagement, or finding the right hashtags without significantly more work.
Tailwind Tools & Training | Is Tailwind for Instagram any Good?
Tailwind’s training is actually quite helpful. Especially with their Instagram platform because it’s new and they’re just rolling it out now, all of their tools have easy instructions that you can find on their website, through the introductory e-mail series that they’ll be sending you and through their Youtube videos.
Here’s an example of their new Instagram “Smart Bio” Training:
Here's an example of their new Instagram "Smart Bio" Training:
- Smart Bio
- Smart Scheduling
- Hashtag Finder
- Content Inspiration
- Content Preview with drag and drop calender (in grid format just like on Instagram to make sure your content is staying consistent and looks good together)
- Integrated stock photos available for inspiration
- Saved Hashtag lists
- Hashtags published in 1st comment
- Built in Tagging
- Video Posts and Story Scheduling
- Photo Cropping
- Regramming Capabilities
- Profile Analytics
- Summary E-mail Reports
- Ability to invite collaborators
- Mobile App
- Youtube Channel Videos /Video Guides
- E-mail Introductory Series when you sign up on the basic features
The training is all excellent but as I mentioned above in my cons, I would really like to see a training series that's more clearly laid out. For instance, it would be nice to have video 1, video 2, video 3, etc. walking me through all the features of the Instagram platform.
If there is anything that you can't find, you can e-mail the team if you have any questions and they're actually pretty good at getting back to you and answering your questions.
Tailwind Support | What if I have Complaints?
Tailwind support is pretty standard as far as online platforms go. Anywhere in the platform that you ask for help, ll forwards to their FAQ as the first step of inquiry:
If you can't find the answer in the automated FAQ, you can message the team. They will get back to you but of course, it's not instantaneous. I haven't been able to find a phone number to call yet so I feel like they want to keep people off the phones and more towards messaging services.
As I said, this is pretty standard.
Their training is quite good and I haven't encountered any glitches in the system so far so personally, I haven't had any issue with not getting support when I really needed it.
Tailwind Price | Is Tailwind for Instagram Worth the Price?
The platform is totally free to try which I love. If you've read any of my other reviews, you'll know that I firmly believe in the try before you buy model. This way you don't end up paying for something that you don't actually want and having to bother with refunds or anything silly. You can schedule up to 30 posts with the free platform and get a feel for how it works.
If you do decide that you like it, then you can upgrade to $20 monthly ($9.99 monthly if you pay on an annual basis). I would say that this is a pretty reasonable pricing model. Competitors that I've used in the past charge more than (up to $75 per month) that and some just for automating integrations without any of the extra features Tailwind offers.
If you are a social media manager, this is definitely worth the price - if you're the only cost of doing business is $15 per month for each account that you run, that's hardly a dent in your earnings at all.
My Final Opinion of Tailwind for Instagram
Overall, I think it's a great tool and it's 100% safe to use with Instagram because Tailwind is a fully-fledged partner. Other services that allow you to follow/unfollow aren't and you always run the risk of getting banned from Instagram.
My favourite part about Tailwind for Instagram is the suggested content, hashtags, and caption styles. Furthermore, I love how you can program from other accounts and then schedule those as well as publish your hashtags in the first comment automatically so you don't have to worry about those appearing in the description of your images.
The best feature though is automatically updating your bio because this allows your profile to be dynamic and shows your audience that you're active and engaged with your profile
It's super convenient that there is a mobile app so if you ever want to schedule something last minute, if you want to schedule things right away that you're doing, or if you've noticed you made a mistake and need to fix it (that happens to me all the time...) you don't have to wait until you're back at your computer to do it.
The only thing I would probably advocate for changing is the formatting of the training for the platform. The videos and guides are easy to understand and follow but it would be nice to have a short video series covering all the tools from beginning to end. Like a video 1-10 series with everything in it so it was clear where to start. As it is, you learn by doing and then you go to the videos for help or how-to's for certain features which I find can take a little bit more time.
But don't take my word for it - you can just try it out for yourself for free for your first 30 posts and see what you think.
