In the next few minutes, I wanted to quickly share how to sell your laptop online in 3 simple steps. You might as well get some money for your old computer either to help pay towards your new one or just for some extra cash.
Usually, whatever company the laptop is made by offers an exchange policy.
For instance, Apple will take your old laptop and sometimes give you money off a new one.
Unfortunately, this doesn’t usually amount to very much and it’s more profitable to go to another site. Also, it’s a pain to do this online so that’s usually something that you have to do in person. As I’m writing this in the middle of COVID-19, going anywhere isn’t really much of an option.
If you want to stick around for a bit longer, I’ll go over how to sell laptops online for cash. Not just your old laptops but there is actually a way to leverage brand new Apple products (and others) to make money.
In fact, you can build an entire business from the ground up doing it and earn a full time income. It’s easier than it sounds – it just takes time and dedication. But first thing’s first – let’s sell your laptop!
Old Computer? Here’s How to Sell your Laptop Online in 3 Simple Steps
#1: Try and Sell it on your Social Media
The first thing you want to do before you spend any real time is try and sell it to your friends and family via social media. You would be surprised how many people might be happy with an older computer for a reduced price.
Just take some pictures and post it on your social media accounts letting everyone now that you’re putting it up for sale. Skip to the next part to figure out a good price for your model and age of computer.
If you strike out with family and friends, that’s when you go online. Anywhere you go online, it’s going to be a little bit annoying because generally the websites will want information from you, you’ll have to set up accounts, you’ll have to give descriptions, etc. etc.
That’s why, I’ve put together a list of websites in order of LEAST TIME needed to MOST TIME needed.
#2: Find a 3rd party website to Sell it On
Here’s your list of websites:
- Gagdet Salvation
- Facebook Marketplace
#3: Be Safe and Completely Erase your Information
If you’ve watched You on Netflix (with the quarantine, I’ve made it through a surprising number of these shows) you’ll know that there’s an awful lot of ways for people to get information about you through technology.
Don’t leave anything to chance and make sure your entire laptop is safely wiped clean before you give it away. If you go through a website like Gagdet Salvation or if you do decide to go through the maker of your laptop (i.e. Apple) then they will most likely do these things for you but it’s better to be safe than sorry I always say!

And you’re done – hopefully this left you with a little bit of extra cash in your pocket. If you’re looking to make some more extra cash online, there is actually a way to sell brand new Apple or PC products believe it or not. I don’t mean actually handling inventory or anything complicated like that.
These giant companies will actually give you a cut if you help them sell more products. It’s really much easier than it sounds and the best part is you only need your laptop.
You can start building your business now for free if you like.

Step 1 – Build a Website Related to Computers, Apple, PC, etc.
Your first step will be to build a website. Using Site Rubix, it’s possible to do this in less than 5 minutes for free. When you’re coming up a name for your website, you want to make sure that it’s something related to laptops. It does not have to be directly related but it needs to be a space where it would make sense to have reviews on these types of products. I’ve included some examples below.
At the end of the day, you should have fun with this! This is going to be your project and in order to build out the website over time, you’re going to be writing posts and articles on it. It should be something that you’re interested in and wouldn’t mind doing research on.
The great thing is that pretty much everything nowadays involves computers so it’s very easy to carve out your own little unique pocket of the internet by mixing something that you love and laptops.
- Laptop Gaming
- Working from your Laptop
- Graphic Design from Home
- Coding for Dummies
- Surviving University/College
Now that you have a name for your website and an idea what you’re going to write about.
Step 2 – Do Some Targeted Research Online
Once you’ve got your new website, the next step is to do a little bit of research. Don’t worry this is much easier than it sounds. Basically you’re going to try and figure out what people search for in Google that relates to your website.
Some of these “keywords” are going to relate to other topics on your website and some are going to relate directly to laptops and which ones to choose.
Basically you want to come up with a list of 100 or so keywords to start with and this is going to serve as the first 100 articles on your website.
a. Alphabet Soup Technique
In this technique, you’re basically going into the Google search bar and typing in different things and seeing what pops up below. Google tries to finish your phrases for you – these are actually commonly searched terms. A good strategy to find ones that relate to your niche is to start with something relevant. For instance you might want to search:
“the best laptop to [insert letter here]”
In the [insert letter here] part, you start with “a” and then “b” and then continue down the alphabet and see what Google fills in for you. Eventually you’ll come up with a keyword list that is relevant to your chosen niche and that you know a little bit about. Voila! Research Complete.
b. Jaaxy Technique.
Another good way to do research is to find out exactly how competitive certain keywords are. When you’re first starting out a website, you want to aim for keywords that aren’t too high competition.
This means that there aren’t a lot of other websites trying to get ranked in Google for that same keyword. When you type in a phrase in Google, it will tell you how many results there are. That number of results is proportional to the competition for that keyword.
For instance, “MacBook Pro” is going to have a LOT more competition than “the best laptop to run graphic design software on”.
Jaaxy is a tool that allows you to find out how competitive keywords are.
You can test it out for free for your first 30 searches which should leave you with at least 10-15 good quality keywords to start with. This is MORE than enough to get your started.
You want the following criteria to be met to ensure that you are targeting keywords that are not too competitive:
– KQI/QSR: “Great”
– Traffic: The more the better
– SEO: 85+
Also you want keywords that make sense. Sometimes there is phrases that people accidentally entered into Google for some reason multiple times. Eventually people will stop searching these so you definitely want to avoid anything that doesn’t make grammatical sense.
Give it a try now:
Okay! We’re almost done. Now you’ve got your website and you’ve got a list of ~100 keywords to start writing articles about. Next is the part that takes time time and dedication; you need to write the content.
Step 3 – Use your Research to Create Content for your Website
Writing content to fill a website is where most online businesses fail when they first start out. The right amount of content is a nebulous concept and people often wonder during this process why they aren’t making money yet. After about 20 or so posts, people usually give up and try something else that’s easier.
Don’t be one of those people.
100 is your target and you need to hit it as fast as possible. Write like you’re writing to a friend – forget formalities – and remember that it doesn’t need to be perfect.
Once your content is live on the website, then you can add more photos, you can fix formating, you can make things more uniform and “pretty”. That is not what you want to get distracted with when you first start.
Here’s a good template to start with:
- Create 1 “sell post” for 10+ other posts: Start with 10 posts. Pick your easiest 9 keywords that are related to your niche and start with those. Just write content to “answer” that keyword’s question. Once you are done that, then choose 1 keyword directly related to laptops such as the one I used above “the best laptop to run graphic design software on”
- Write, write and write more: You want your posts to actually be helpful. Make sure you’re completely answering the question. A good strategy is to look at the top 5 posts on Google for that topic now and make sure you have at least as much information as all the 5 together. (DO NOT COPY CONTENT THOUGH)
- Link all your other posts to your sell posts: Eventually you’ll have ~90 general posts and ~10 posts directly talking about laptops. Try and find a way to link the 90 to the 10. You want all visitors to end up on one of those 10 selling articles.
Step 4 – Add Links from Amazon
This is the part where you add links that will make you money! Go to Amazon and sign up to be an affilaite. It only takes a minute. Now you have links to every single product that Amazon sells including Apple, PC, etc. Add those affiliate links into your sales pages
Voila! You’re done.
The trick is now to get more traffic to your website. The more traffic you get to your website, the more people will click on those links and the more money you’ll make. So next, you have to scale your traffic:
Step 5 – Scale the Traffic to your New Niche Website
Scaling traffic comes down to 2 methods. Either you keep ranking more and more articles into Google and getting those articles ranked higher or you use “PPC” which is paid advertising. Writing more content is self explanitory but monitoring your Google results is a little bit out of the scope of this article. Same with using PPC advertising. These are more advanced online marketing methods.
- Keep Writing Content + Monitor Google Results
- Use “Pay-per-click” Advertising
Whew! That was a lot to take in in a short amount of time. If you take anything away from this article, I really hope it’s the following:
1) It is possible to make a legitamate business online and even grow it to the point where you’re making a full time income
2) The key to building a successful website that makes money is to WRITE A LOT of content that answers questions people are actually looking for
3) It comes down to writing good quality content and reviews about expensive computers (i.e. the MacBook Pro), and then linking to those products, to make a percentage of that sale.
If this sounds interesting to you and you want to give it a try, then believe it or not there’s a platform online with a community of 10s of thousands of people many of whom are making money already doing this. Most of them aren’t selling laptops online but they’re using the same concept.
Personally, I run 3 online businesses; 1 in the art niche (where I do review Apple products including laptops), 1 in the horse niche and this one! All 3 I built by following the step by step training at the Wealthy Affilaite University and all 3 make me money.
You can give it a try today for free if you like – that’s $0 (no credit cards) and just see if you like it.
