This post is really meant for the beginner to affiliate marketing so if you’re more advanced, I’d take a look around the menu above as there’s some more advanced content there.
Once you establish yourself online, there are a lot of different ways how to make money with affiliate marketing, and it’s one of the best ways (in my opinion). And, in this blog post. we’ll cover everything there is to know about Affiliate Income:
- What is Affiliate Marketing?
- How Much Can You Earn?
- 4 Fundamentals Affiliate Marketing
- Finding the Right Niche
- Creating Quality Content
- How To Find Good Affiliate Products
- Inserting Affiliate Links
What is Affiliate Marketing?
When an eCommerce website pays you a commission for traffic or sales generated by your referrals, this is known as affiliate marketing.
It’s essentially traditional advertising done in a less intrusive manner. Rather than using visual advertisements to promote a product on your website, simply embed the product link in your content, as shown below:
Jaaxy, an online SEO tool that provides keyword research in helping your rank and helps you bring in traffic, is the affiliate partner in the image above.
Do you think this is a lot to take in? I’ll explain in a different context:
Imagine that a reader visits your post about the “Affordable Denim Jackets”. They click on one of your affiliate links, leading them to a product on Amazon.
But they realized they have to go to work. So they leave their house, go to their office and then finally go back to Amazon where they find the product again.
Since they’re already shopping on Amazon, they decide to purchase some cotton jackets too.
Here’s the good news. Earlier, they clicked on your affiliate link and a cookie was stored on their device. Because Amazon has a 24-hour cookie duration, you get compensated for both the denim jacket and the cotton jacket—even though you didn’t promote the latter.
So, you can build a website, toss in a bunch of affiliate links, and then sit back and watch the affiliate commissions roll in? We’re not quite there yet, but we’ll get there.
For the time being, you only need to understand the fundamentals of affiliate marketing, which I’ll show you in the following paragraphs.
How Much CAN You Earn?
You can earn as much as you want!
Your income is usually directly proportional to the amount of traffic you can generate. Remember that in order to get traffic, you must have a website. With each new post on your website, you should be creating relevant content that targets specific “low competition” keywords.
I’ll give you a few scenarios to work with to bring a sense of some of the lower-end averages so you can get a fair sense of the earning potential.
Assume your website receives 1,000 clicks per month. This equates to 33 clicks per day, which will be more than achievable once you get started.
Let’s say you get a 20% click-through rate on your affiliate links out of these 1,000 clicks. 1,000 divided by 0.20 equals 200 affiliate clicks.
Scenario 1: If 1:50 (or 2% of these people) end up purchasing something, you will make four sales.
Scenario 2: If 1:20 (or 5%) of these people buy something, you will make ten sales.
If you promote a product that pays $30 per sale (which is fairly common), you will earn $120 in the first scenario and $300 in the second.
These are all very conservative figures for only one month! That same traffic will convert for you all year long and will work for you 24 hours a day.
Don’t Overcomplicate Things – 4 Fundamentals on How To Make Money With Affiliate Marketing
1: Customer has a problem and they are searching for a solution
2: They find your website as they’re searching because your website solves their problem
3: There is a link on your website to a product, software, or service that solves their problem
4: They purchase the product, software, or service and you make money!
That is the core of the affiliate marketing business. It is SIMPLE to understand but it takes work to build up that online presence so that people can find you. It’s all about persistence.
A lot of people out there will tell you that there’re quick ways to make affiliate sales and even if this might work, it’s NOT going to be a good long-term strategy and the earnings are always limited.
The only way to find long-term success with affiliate marketing with earnings that you can consistently grow and build upon and eventually for it to become more of a passive source of income is to build a trustworthy website and use the right strategies in building your online business.
Your website will serve as the foundation of your online business and it should get the highest amount of your love and attention – especially during the first 3-6 months of your new business.
How do I Find the Right Niche?
A niche is a specific topic that you are going to target with your website. That’s how you’ll be able to distinguish your website from other people’s and also how you’re going to make it easy for your audience to find you.
A good niche online is one that is specific and one that you’re passionate about. If you like dogs, do something dog-related! If you love football, do something football-related. If you like machines, do something machine-related. It’s as simple as that!
Remember that this is going to be something that you’re working on for a while if you want to really build a solid business from it so you want to make sure that you enjoy what you’re doing.
Don’t choose something that you think will be profitable but that you hate because you’re never going to want to create content or work on your website.
Affiliate marketing the right way takes persistence and it takes the willingness to create quality content.
The one caveat is that you should choose a niche that’s specific.
What does that mean exactly? It makes the most sense if you think about the products that you’ll be promoting. You don’t want to end up in a niche where the list is literally endless. For instance, “sports” is probably way too broad. Even something like “football” or “soccer” or “basketball” is broad. “Basketball shoes” on the other hand is probably a good niche!
Remember that you can always expand later to include more stuff but initially, it’s good to start specific and then work your way out.
Can you Show me an Example that This Works?
This is a case study that one of my mentors, Jay Neill, showed me when I was first starting out in affiliate marketing.
I thought it was hilarious because the niche was “football snack helmets” (notice how specific that is btw!! but also smart because the audience includes all football fans, which is massive!) but it also made me feel relieved because looking around that website made me realize that I could 100% do the same thing with something that I was passionate about.
The website is literally footballsnackhelmets.com.
It’s been around for over a decade and is still bringing in money.
If you go to the front page, right away it’s obvious what the website is about:
The first menu item is a bunch of different helmets for all the different football teams:
You can immediately find one for your favorite team or if you were looking for a friend, you could get one for them. Each helmet has its own review with a link to amazon. Every time anyone purchases a helmet through that link, Jay will get a commission through the Amazon Affiliate program:
The best thing about this website is that it’s SIMPLE.
Once again, don’t overcomplicate things and that’s the problem with broad niches – its leads to over-complication because you’re trying to cover everything in your niche to look professional. Let’s say instead of football snack helmets, this website was about “football”.
The products are endless: football clothing, football shirts, football gear, footballs, football shoes…
It would be so overwhelming to try to cover all of that, don’t you think?
Remember that you don’t need to get it right the first time. You can always just start another niche if you’re the first pick isn’t working. There’s absolutely no harm in that. You’re just starting out – you’re going to make mistakes and that’s totally OK 🙂
How to Create a Quality Content to Generate Affiliate Income?
Most beginners who want to make money with affiliate marketing simply publish some random content and insert affiliate links within the article.
That strategy may or may not work, but if you truly want to increase your affiliate revenue, you must ensure that the content you publish reaches your intended audience. Your target audience is someone who wants to buy a product but is unsure whether it is worthwhile.
Sometimes they are unsure of which product to purchase to meet their needs.
It is your job as an affiliate marketer to help people discover the right product for their needs by providing high-quality content, assisting them in making a purchasing decision, and then directing them to the product website.
For more details, you can check our guide here on what topics to write about and how to write about them to make money.
How do I Find Good Affiliate Products?
There are affiliate products for every single hobby or interest out there. Any problem that you can think of that people might have you’ll be able to find an affiliate product for.
In order to find affiliate products, you:
1) join databases of affiliate programs (i.e. ShareASale or ClickBank) or
2) google the product you’re looking for followed by the affiliate.
Let’s say I’m a dog lover and I want to promote leather dog leashes (btw I do love dogs and I use leather for my German Shepherds because it lasts the best). I would google “leather dog leashes affiliate program” or “dog supplies affiliate program” and inevitably a ton of programs would pop up.
There are massive programs such as Amazon Affiliates which contain all sorts of different products. Then there are independent affiliate programs from businesses like Etsy or Nike, which tailor to specific “niches”.
Inserting Affiliate Products on your Content
Once you’ve determined the right niche, developed content ideas, and selected affiliate products, it’s time to begin incorporating affiliate links into your content.
The way you insert your affiliate links will vary depending on the article you’re writing. The goal is to insert your links in the most strategic way possible. Here are a few pointers to help you make the most of your affiliate link arrangement:
- If you’re showcasing multiple products in one blog, I recommend that your affiliate products are NOT at the bottom of your blog post, because there are chances that the majority of people will not read an entire article. You want to make sure they see your affiliate links from the beginning.
- Only link when it’s appropriate. Don’t include an affiliate link if it’s not relevant to your content. This will have a negative impact on the user experience on your website and will result in more lost traffic in the long run.
PRO TIP: Invest in an affiliate link plugin like Pretty Links before you start adding hundreds of affiliate links to your site. It takes so much time having to go through and update hundreds of expired affiliate links when you have no idea where they are on your website.
Pretty Links is an affiliate marketing management plugin that allows you to keep track of your affiliate links more effectively. It’s simple to set up, extremely user-friendly, and even for less tech-savvy marketers. It also allows you to hide affiliate links in order to make them look short and neat, making them easy to share via emails and social media platforms.
Now it’s your turn to give it a try!
I tried to keep this post as a general overview of the process of making money with affiliate marketing. I didn’t want to get too into specifics.
If you’re stuck on details such as how to actually build a website, how to create a page in WordPress, or how to insert a link into a post, what you need is step-by-step video training.
When I was first getting into the world of online business, I didn’t have any idea what WordPress even was!
The way I learned was through a step-by-step 50 video course where I was able to learn from another one of my mentors, Kyle on how to build an affiliate marketing website from start to finish. The 1st 10 videos cover the basics such as how to actually build the website, create pages, create posts, build-out menus, etc. and how to get your affiliate links and post them into your website.
The 1st 10 videos are also 100% free (no credit cards needed or anything like that).
I would recommend watching those – each video is only about 10-20 minutes so set aside a few hours and by the end of it, I guarantee you’ll have a sparkly new website that will become the foundation of your new online business. You can come here and post a nasty comment below if it doesn’t haha – or you can ask me for help and of course, I’ll help you out!
If you have any questions or concerns that I can help with, please do not be shy! Let me know in the comments below and I’ll get back to you within 24 hours
