Who is the Calm App for?
Calm App can help anyone who wants to improve their mental wellness or equip themselves with new tools to deal with day-to-day well-being struggles.
Because their special feature (kids area content) is great and has incredibly simple meditations for all ages, the app is really helpful for families wishing to experience mindfulness with their children for the first time.
If you’re like me whose dealing with work burnout or stress (from day trading crypto!), or if you need more focus in your workday, there are mindfulness exercises to help you focus and reconnect with the passion in your work, as well as awesome ambient music playlists to help keep you on track.
Calm App can help you if you are new to breathwork and meditation exercises and are unsure what it is or how to do them properly. However, if you’ve been meditating for a while, Calm App will never let you down by providing intermediate or semi-advanced practices to discover!
Calm App Features
The app invites you to take a few deep breaths as soon as you open it. Then, a pop-up menu prompts you to select what brought you to the app in order for it to tailor recommendations based on your objectives.
You might be asked, “Are you looking to increase your happiness or reduce your stress?” Do you want to sleep better or feel less anxious? Is it all of the above?
Calm’s free app boasts an impressive number of meditation courses and other content. However, finding this free content can be difficult, especially if you are new to the app and don’t know where to look. The free version gives you access to some limited meditation courses on anxiety and stress. To get the full experience of everything the app has to offer, you must sign up for a premium subscription.
When you first log in to Calm, you will see area buttons on your screen with names like “meditation,” “music,” “check-ins,” and “breathe,” which are the spaces where you can find free content. You can either click through each one to search through hubs and eventually find the free meditation courses, or you can use the list I created to get you meditating much faster.
When you click the “Discover” hub, a search bar appears at the top of your app. Simply type the name of the free meditation you want to try into the list below.
The most well-known aspect of Calm is its meditations. They are classified into several categories, including sleep, anxiety, beginners, stress, work, self-care, inner peace, and 8 more categories.
Each category contains meditation packs or singles on a specific topic. In the Stress section, for example, you’ll find sessions such as “Managing Overwhelm,” “Get Energized,” and “Break the Stress Cycle.”
Beginners are encouraged to begin with the “7 Days of Calm” course written and narrated by Tamara Levitt and then progress to the “21 Days of Calm” series to hone their skills.
There is also a couple of short audio series led by big-name celebrities discussing their journeys into mindfulness.

Many of the sleep stories feature celebrity voices, including Kate Winslet and Benedict Cumberbatch.
Calm’s music section contains hundreds of carefully curated soundtracks to help you relax while continuing to work, walk, or snooze. Everything in the app is divided into six categories:

- relax and unwind
- yoga and movement
- sleep story melodies
- nature melodies
Calm also plays music in the background as you explore the app or start a session. It’s custom-designed, so you can select from a soothing aquascape, rain in a forest, a campfire, and even the sounds from city parks!
This offering is ideal for anyone interested in delving deeper into the world of mindfulness. The Calm Masterclasses are audio classes that delve deeper into various topics such as screen addiction, creativity, habit breaking, and conscious parenting. These classes are taught by well-known mindfulness experts and professionals like Elizabeth Gilbert, and Ryan Holiday.
There’s a free introductory class to join, but to access the entire masterclass, you’ll need to get their premium subscription.
Calm has a variety of meditations, sleep stories, and lullabies for kids of all ages. With Poppy (voiced by Anna Kendrick) from Trolls, kids may learn to meditate, listen to peaceful lullabies, or fall asleep to famous stories like “Beauty and the Beast” or “Jack and the Beanstalk.”
Calm App claims that the sessions give kids the help they need to deal with and manage their emotions and convey a more positive perspective on life as they grow older. Furthermore, research published in 2016 reveals that mindfulness education can help some children enhance psychological functioning, and reduce stress-related symptoms.
This section has 10-minute sessions that lead a person through mild stretches and meditative exercises with the goal of relieving stress and recharging the mind.

In my opinion, this is- by far, the best feature the Calm app offers.
These are the journal and mood tracking sections. These are available in both the free and paid versions of Calm. You can keep track of how you’re feeling, how you slept, what you’re grateful for, and a daily commentary in one of the four journals. On your own profile, you can even see how the progress of your journal.
The “What Are You Grateful For” is one of my favorite journals. You’ll be given a prompt and room to write down three items in reaction to it. The button on this diary allows you to shuffle prompts and choose the one that best suits your mood.
Calm App Support
Even though the Calm app has it all, there are some things that they need to tweak, especially their poor customer support. Customers complain about unresponsive customer service, and the app renews your subscription without notice.

Calm is available for free, of course! When a person signs up, when you sign up, you can receive a 7-day free trial and are automatically enrolled in Calm Premium.
The free version of the app provides daily access to an original Daily Calm session, as well as check-ins, several sound scenes, and selected sessions from meditation courses. Meanwhile, the Premium version gives you FULL access to all its features mentioned above.
My Final Opinion of the Calm App
When it comes to the app, I believe there is far more good than bad. I use it every day for 10 minutes and have no plans to stop. One of my favorite features of the app is that it sends daily mindfulness quotes and I could do some journaling!
These are their reminders, and while I don’t think they’re strong enough to make me stop what I’m doing and start meditating, they did make me more mindful in the moment.
I also liked how they gave you a quote at the end of each session that you could share on social media. Calm is a fantastic app in general. The meditations are engaging and enjoyable to listen to, and the app itself is stunning.
Just a friendly advice: A person in the midst of a mental health crisis should not rely on a mindfulness app. Instead, they should seek help from a reputable mental health organization.
